A helpful introduction from The ADHD Expert—

When we think of childhood—visions of children laughing and playing, flying kites, climbing trees, and enjoying their carefree, happy years should fill our minds. Unfortunately, there are many children today whose childhood is filled with frequent failure, stress, frustration, failing grades, forgetting and losing things, difficulty with peers, emotional melt-downs, continually being reminded and/or scolded, and minimal joy in their life. These are the hallmarks of a child with ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder) or ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder). I know this—not just as a professional, but also as a parent. I own a private ADHD learning center called Success Pointe. Also, each of my own five children has one or more characteristics of ADD or ADHD. For simplification, I'll refer to both these conditions as ADHD.

The well-known characteristics of ADHD include difficulty paying attention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity. However, there are actually more than 70 characteristics. These can be cognitive, behavioral, emotional, social, and/or physical. I provide a comprehensive review of these in my book available on this website. There's also a free survey on my download page that helps parents and their child identify these ADHD characteristics in their own lives.

ADHD is surrounded by many misconceptions. One is thinking that if the child is punished, he can be made to act appropriately. But it is important to remember that ADHD behaviors are not behaviors a child chooses. Rather, they are the result of one or more of about 30 factors (also covered in my book).

Another misconception is that drugs are the only answer. While drugs can ease symptoms in a percentage of children, there are many children they don't help. In addition, drugs come with side effects. Fortunately, there IS a non-drug approach that is highly effective—and free of side effects. I have discovered four key components that must be met in order to minimize ADHD characteristics and achieve success. These four components are:

  1. Chemical and physical well-being
  2. RARE interactions (Respect, Accept/Adapt, Relate, and Empower)
  3. An environment and tools conducive to success
  4. The right knowledge and skills

Parents of a child with ADHD can easily feel overwhelmed, frustrated, bewildered, angry, discouraged, and hopeless. My mission is to help parents find a brightness of hope that their child can triumph over ADHD—and experience success, fulfillment, and joy in life. It's not always an easy objective, but definitely worth it. I offer every parent the tools and training they need to make their child's life better. I hope you will enjoy exploring this website and all that it has to offer.

Introducing my ADHD Center—

Much of the help you will get from this website and from my other parent resource materials, has been developed and proven over the past eight years through both my research on ADHD and the establishment of Success Pointe ADHD Center located in Draper, Utah.

Success Pointe is a flagship program in Utah that receives scholarship funding by the state for students with special needs like ADHD, Asperger's, Autism, etc. We are now in our sixth year and have had many miraculous "success" stories of children who have transformed from situations of discouragement and despair to success and hope for the future.

There is one thing I can promise virtually every struggling parent. I know what you are going through and know how to make things better. Working day in and day out with kids at Success Pointe, along with my other professional experience, has given me the knowledge and insight that will make the difference in helping you achieve the results you desire for your child and your family.
